Plumber Fennell Bay

Plumbing in Fennell Bay is shaped by water in the ground: on the flat blocks near the shore, the water table climbs whenever the lake level does. Fennell Bay sits beside Blackalls Park, and Blackalls Park Plumbing Co covers it on the same run, handling drains, hot water, gas and urgent faults at a fixed price.

A Postwar Suburb on a Shallow Bay

Built after the war

The land was subdivided in 1882, but most homes went up after the war, in fibro, brick-veneer and some weatherboard. The census counted 698 dwellings, and separate houses made up 88.1 per cent.

Steel pipe under fibro

Many of the postwar fibro homes above the bay still have their original galvanised water services, now badly corroded inside. Low pressure and rusty water are the signs.

Clay that has sagged

Clay sewer lines from the postwar building boom went into soft lake-edge ground, and some have settled unevenly. A belly in the line holds waste between flushes and catches paper.

Groundwater and salt

Near the shore, a trench fills with water almost as it is dug, and brackish air and salty soil moisture wear on outdoor taps, hot water valves and buried fittings. Stormwater has little fall across the flat streets, so yards pond quickly in heavy rain.

When we're not the right call. A gas smell at the meter or out in the street is the gas network's to handle, so ring their emergency line first; the pipework inside your boundary is ours.

Questions From the Bayside Blocks

Do the old clay sewers near the bay need digging up to fix?

Not by default. The line is cleared first, then filmed to see whether a section has sagged or cracked in the soft ground. A sagged or split length may be relined from inside, and the price is set before we start.
